Bancroft's
Sea Scouts is the Scout group at Bancroft's. Sea Scouts are a special
section within the Scout Association. They do all the activities that
a normal Scout troop such as camping, cooking on wood fires and hiking,
but also a wide range of water-based activities. During the warm summer
evenings Scouts and Explorers have the chance to get on the water
at Fairlop Waters. Under the supervision of the leader team they are
taught sailing, kayaking and rowing. Sometimes it can all get very
wet!!!
The activities are run by a highly qualified group of leaders, many
of whom are Old Bancroftians. Their qualifications allow a wide range
of activities to be safely run including both dinghy and yacht sailing,
kayaking, rowing, power boating, climbing and swimming. Two leaders
are qualified RYA Powerboat Instructors, allowing them to teach the
RYA syllabus, especially on the group's RIB, a fast powerboat.
The impressive facilities available to the group are the school gym
and swimming pool used heavily in the winter, Gilwell Park for "wide-games"
and camp fires and Fairlop Waters for sailing and kayaking in the
long summer evenings.
Bancroft's Sea Scouts is one of only one hundred Sea Scout groups
in the country to be recognised by the Royal Navy in recognition of
the high standard of training and activities. This entitles the group
to stay on board HMS Bristol, a real (but decommissioned!) Type 82
destroyer, and go sailing or power boating from the Navy's Sailing
Centre.
The highlight of the year is the annual summer camp. This week-long
camp held in the summer holidays includes many exciting activities:
a range of land and water activities and challenges. Locations are
varied, and have included North Wales, Scottish Borders, Norfolk Broads,
West Mersea and even as far as Holland. In addition to summer camps
a number of other camps occur throughout the year. There are typically
two trip to stay on HMS Bristol in Portsmouth for water activities
camps; a Christmas camp for land activities such as hiking, fire lighting
and cooking;
The group has three
age ranges: Cubs for Betas to Prep 2s; Scouts for Prep 2s to Lower
Fourths and Explorers for Lower Fourths upwards. Each age group has
its own distinctive style, and the activities get progressively more
adventurous towards the older age groups.

Bancroft's Sea Scouts is an exciting opportunity, and it is guaranteed
