  Sixth Form Prospectus Head's Introduction

The Sixth Form at Bancroft's offers you special opportunities and a well-designed environment to pursue A level studies and to prepare for University life and a future career. The range of subjects available for study and the flexibility with which they may be combined are important features. The variety of study facilities and common rooms ensure that you will find conditions which are well adapted for working fruitfully and enjoyably.

We offer five scholarships a year, worth one half of the fees, to external Sixth Form candidates on the basis of an exam held in November. We also offer fee paying places on the basis of Mock GCSE results, generally from January to March. The total number of external Sixth form entrants is generally between 10 and 15.

In addition to your A level subjects you will also pursue a course of General Studies designed to broaden your academic and intellectual approach and to introduce you to important areas of study which you might not otherwise encounter. It will result in a further significant exam qualification. Every fortnight the Sixth Form is addressed by an outside speaker whose rôle is to raise issues of importance not covered by the school curriculum and to generate discussion as much as to inform.

Your Sixth Form career will also provide important opportunities for you to continue and expand your participation in school life beyond academic work. There is a wide range of societies and activities available to you. Sport, drama and music draw heavily on Sixth Form expertise, and allow you to pursue your enthusiasms and develop your talents. There are many opportunities in all these fields for you to take positions of responsibility and to show a capacity for leadership. The programme of Lower School activities in particular enables Sixth Formers to play an important rôle in organising, encouraging and supervising younger pupils. Many Lower Sixth Formers decide to get involved in the Engineering Education Scheme.

The Sixth Form is always a period of intense activity and growth in many areas and is intended both to be enjoyable and to promote those qualities and qualifications you will need in the future.
